A local business is slowly getting back to its feet after hackers sent through codes over the weekend restoring access to it's business files.
Jeremy Spoehr, owner of TDC Refrigeration and Electrical says he paid 3000 (USD) to the off shore hackers and they responded on Saturday afternoon.
"My codes were sent to me and they did release the cryptic [on the business files]...I think I'll probably get most of my files yet, but in what condition I'm not sure..."
Mr Spoehr's computer system was hacked last week leaving him unable to open any of his business files.
"I switched the computers on and noticed some weird screens...one of them said it was going to invade my computer with child pornography," he says.
"An hour or so later I had an email telling me I'd been hacked into and that I was up for ransom." He says police have been unable to assist.
"Unfortunately the police haven't been much help," he says. Because it's offshore hacking it's really out of their jurisdiction, they've said there's nothing they can do." Mr Spoehr says he's lost thousands over the incident and it will be a slow recovery. "Come Monday morning I had umpteen guys standing in my office looking for work, I couldn't give it to them," he says. "I'm standing in my IT room at the moment, and there's wires and computers pulled apart, it's just a mess..."
