CryptoLocker, a new “ransomware” virus, began making the rounds several months ago. But a particularly virulent strain of the infection popped up in mid-September, affecting individuals and business owners alike.
The malware takes hold in a variety of ways: after a user clicks on a link or attachment in a spam email; via exploit kits on hacked websites; or through Trojans that pretend to be required programs to view online videos. Once installed, CryptoLocker scans a computer’s local and network drives, encrypts over 50 different file types, and then demands anywhere from $350-$1000 to de-encrypt them, even if you pay the money you never get the files they just keep asking for more and more until you give up.
I know many of you are concerned about how easy it is to trace your online activity and how that information can be used and while I am not suggesting you engage in criminal activity it occurred to me that the collar bomber who attempted to extort money from the pulver family by placing a fake collar bomb around 17 year old Madeleine Pulver’s neck could have easily avoided detection.

It’s been 8 months since the release of Windows 8 and I have for the most part have been able to place it low on the to-do list. There are 2 reasons for this one is it’s confusing interface and secondly it has not been received with enthusiasm in the market place.
However with Windows XP support ending soon I have to decided to address it and discover if it is something end users would like and or need.
